Sophie's face is beautiful, but no one can stop staring at her hand. She wears gloves when she is in public. Sometimes in private, as well. She can't stop staring at it, either. When you stare at a single point long enough, your eyes grow bored and quit seeing it. Try it tonight. Pick a star from the sky and stare directly at it. Soon you can't see it unless you turn your head and catch it with your peripheral vision. Or try it with your LED alarm clock. After a couple of minutes you can't even note the minutes passing. This isn't working for Sophie. Everything seems to become more and more crisp. Sometimes she catches a glimpse of things that cannot be by looking through the space in her palm. Sometimes she holds it to her ear and hears a voice. Usually, she wears gloves. |
